What happened?
Rockstar announced Grand Theft Auto VI's pricing and editions on June 24, 2026, the day before pre-orders opened at midnight local time on June 25. The standard game costs $79.99 in the U.S. on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition costs $99.99. Those prices have not changed since, and with launch now about six weeks away, they're the numbers to plan around.
Standard vs Ultimate: the difference
Both editions contain the same full game. The extra $20 for the Ultimate Edition buys a bundle of in-game extras that Rockstar describes as premium vehicles, weapons, clothing and other items threaded through Jason and Lucia's story. Coverage of the announcement lists more than 15 items, including a Grotti Cheetah, boats and motorcycles, an exclusive clothing store, mod shops, and a tattoo parlor with more than 50 designs from the artist collective FAILE.
Nothing announced so far suggests the Ultimate Edition includes story content, extra missions or early access to the game. It is a cosmetic and convenience upgrade on top of the same campaign, so the honest question to ask is whether those specific extras are worth $20 to you.
The pre-order bonus
Pre-orders include the Vintage Vice City Pack, which Rockstar describes as items that flash back to the era when Vice City's neon burned brightest — a nod to 2002's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Digital pre-orders were also reported to include a free month of GTA+, Rockstar's existing subscription. Check the storefront you buy from for the exact terms and any deadline that applies in your region.
Why the physical edition has no disc
The boxed version of Grand Theft Auto VI contains a download code rather than a game disc. Rockstar says the physical edition will be available from November 12 so that box buyers can redeem the code and pre-load alongside digital players. In practice that means a physical copy still requires an internet connection and a full download, and it cannot be lent or resold the way a disc-based copy traditionally could.
Why it matters
$79.99 is $10 above the $69.99 price that became standard for big console releases over the last few years, which makes GTA VI one of the most visible tests of whether players will pay more for the biggest games. It also arrives in a year when console hardware prices have risen sharply, so the total cost of getting into Leonida is higher than many expected — something we cover in our console prices explainer.
What we don't know
- Whether any additional editions or bundles will appear closer to launch
- Pricing for a PC version — no PC version has been announced
- Anything about GTA Online's next chapter, and whether it will cost extra
- Final regional prices in every market (prices vary by country and storefront)
Source context
Prices, edition names, the pre-order bonus, the code-in-a-box physical edition and the November 12 pre-load date all come from Rockstar's own June announcement and official site. Edition contents beyond Rockstar's own wording are from established press coverage of that announcement. U.S. prices are quoted; other regions differ.
What happens next
Pre-loading opens on November 12 for digital copies and for codes redeemed from physical boxes, and the game launches November 19. See our launch countdown for every confirmed date in between.
