What happened?
On September 29, 2026, Game Informer published its issue 382 cover story on Grand Theft Auto VI: a 14-page feature built on interviews with senior Rockstar developers, accompanied by a dozen new screenshots released by Rockstar. Game Informer made the digital issue available at launch, ahead of the print edition reaching subscribers and stores.
Where the trailers and August's Extended Look focused on Jason, Lucia and the story, the cover story focuses on Leonida itself — Rockstar's fictional take on Florida — and three threads in particular: the weather system, the wildlife, and how the team researched Miami and South Florida to build Vice City and the surrounding state.
Hurricanes, tropical storms and a new wind system
The headline reveal is that Leonida gets tropical storms and full hurricanes. In the feature, a senior Rockstar lighting and rendering lead describes storms combining heavy cloud, strong winds, dense atmosphere and so much rain that everything ends up dripping wet. Reports on the interview also describe fully dynamic cloudscapes, ranging from clear winter skies to towering thunderclouds with lightning.
Underneath the storms is a new wind system. According to coverage of the feature, wind moves hair and loose debris, ripples water surfaces and bends grass in the swamps, and it varies by place and time — offshore breezes after sunset, updrafts, and buildings shielding the streets around them. Rain is also reported to leave puddles that persist, with rainbows after the weather clears.
What has not been explained is how often hurricanes happen, whether they are scripted for story missions or can arrive at random, and whether they change how missions or activities play. Rockstar showed what storms look like; it has not described their gameplay rules.
More than 170 animal species
The second big thread is wildlife. Coverage of the cover story reports more than 170 species across land, sea and sky — over 60 kinds of birds and more than 30 land mammals, plus fish, sharks and reptiles. Florida natives such as manatees, flamingos, pelicans and alligators are named, alongside invasive species that live in South Florida today, such as green iguanas, cane toads and rhesus macaques.
Reports also say animals will be tracked by rarity, with rare and legendary creatures that are hard to find — a structure that will feel familiar to anyone who played Red Dead Redemption 2's wildlife systems. Exactly how hunting, fishing or photography tie into that rarity system has not been fully detailed.
A bigger map and new activities
In the feature, Rockstar veteran Aaron Garbut describes Leonida as roughly twice the size of Grand Theft Auto V's map and the studio's biggest world by some margin. That is a developer's description reported through Game Informer rather than a published figure in square miles, so treat it as a scale indication, not a measurement. Regions referenced in coverage include downtown Vice City and its beaches, the Grassrivers wetlands, the Keys and swampland.
Coverage also lists activities ranging from base jumping, kayaking, scuba diving, jet skis and airboats to gyms, billiards, mini golf and zoos, as well as street and off-road racing. Some of these are reported to double as date activities for Jason and Lucia.
Why it matters
Weather and wildlife are exactly the kind of systems that decide how a world feels hour to hour, and they are hard to judge from a two-minute trailer. Rockstar choosing to spend a long-form cover story on them — rather than on story or online modes — is a signal of what it thinks sets GTA VI apart. It also gives the clearest picture yet of how Florida-specific the setting is, down to the invasive species living in it.
What we don't know yet
- How frequent hurricanes are, and whether they affect missions, traffic or the economy
- How the animal rarity system connects to hunting, fishing or photography
- An official map size figure, beyond the "around twice GTA V" description
- Anything new about GTA Online — the cover story is about the single-player world
- Any PC version — Rockstar still lists only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
Source context
The screenshots were released by Rockstar, and the interviews are with Rockstar developers, so the substance of the feature comes from the studio. Details marked "reported" above come from Game Informer's piece as summarized by several outlets; ZOQSY has not independently seen the full 14-page article, and some secondary summaries disagreed on small points — one, for example, wrongly listed PC as a launch platform. Where summaries conflicted, this article uses the more conservative version.
What happens next
GTA VI is still scheduled for November 19, 2026, with digital pre-loading from November 12. Rockstar's pre-launch publicity has run through magazine features since August, and more is likely before launch. We'll update our GTA 6 coverage as anything official arrives.
